7 Delicious Recipes to Celebrate Peach Season

How to Make the Most of Peach Season with Delicious Recipes

Finally, Summer is here and, of course, the start of peach season. Peaches and Nectarines kick off the stone fruit season.

Stone fruits aren’t just light and delicious, they’re also healthy, making them perfect for anyone who wants to eat mindfully. Peaches, in particular, are ideal for athletes because they’re 90% water, so they’re low in calories but packed with vitamins and minerals. That’s why they’re the perfect light snack for in between meals, especially in the summer.

History and origin of Peaches

Peaches have a long history, dating back to 6000 B.C. The peach tree is one of the oldest cultivated species and is native to China. Like almonds, cherries, many berries, and other stone fruits, it belongs to the rose family. Originating in Asia, this stone fruit spread via various routes to countries with warm, dry climates.

Also, the nectarine is a mutation of the peach with smooth skin and yellowish flesh. The nutritional content of both is similar, though the nectarine has a slightly higher vitamin B3 content.

The harvest season for peaches and nectarines begins, depending on the region, in May-July; the fruits are mostly harvested while still firm to facilitate transport and then ripen further before being eaten.
When a peach is harvested at full ripeness, it tastes juicy and sweet; before that, it still has distinctly tart notes.

The main difference between a peach and a nectarine is its fuzzy, rough skin, which isn’t shiny but has a velvety appearance. The flesh varies in color from almost white to pale yellow to dark orange or even light red.

How to tell if a Peach is fresh?

When buying peaches, they should look plump and round, with unblemished skin. If they give off a sweet, aromatic scent, they are fully ripe and should be eaten soon. That’s when they taste best.

How to store Peaches, and can they be frozen?

Peaches can be stored in the refrigerator drawer for 4 to 5 days, but not packed tightly together. They are very sensitive to pressure. Often sold while still unripe, they can ripen at room temperature. Peaches can only be frozen if they are peeled first. Peach pieces placed in a freezer bag can keep for about eight months.

Peaches are healthy

Peaches delight not only food lovers but also health-conscious people: The fruit’s flesh is rich in provitamin A, iron, calcium, and potassium, as well as B vitamins.

The crisp calls for desiccated coconut, almond flour, dates, cinnamon, and pecans. Maple syrup adds optional sweetness, and coconut butter (also optional) adds richness to the dish, which is especially helpful if you’re leaving it raw. It helps create that crumbly texture commonly found in a crisp.
